In 2017, Italian trade strongly increased. The trend of exports is + 7.4% and the value of imports grew by the 9%, mainly because of the significant recovery of oil prices. This trend represents the higher growth rates since 2012
Surce: Italian Trade Agency – Although the trade balance is decreasing if compared to the previous year, the surplus is still solid (€ 47.5 billion). By not taking into account the energy sector (Italy is a net importer of energy products), the trade surplus would be around 81 billion euros (+2 billions of euros compared to 2016). Despite being lower than internal EU trade, commerce with extra EU countries increased faster: + 8.2% export and + 10.8% import
